Item Condition

I grade products as honestly as possible and depict blemishes in both description and photos—please study them carefully. I tend to be overcritical and customers report items to be in better shape than expected often. From best condition to worst condition, my grading scale is as follows. Mint / near mint+ / near mint / excellent+ / excellent / great / very good / average / fair.

Description

This is a rare early Rock Lobster Expert, which according to founder Paul Sadoff himself only 400-500 Expert frames were made from 1993 to 1998.  These early models feature a Tange chromoly steel frame, wishbone seatstays, strengthening gussets on both top tube and downtube, and side of top tube cable stops.  The later 1997-1998 models were Kinesis alloy tubing. The Expert was a derailleur frame only, but this one was converted singlespeed with the legendary Sub-11 reverse fork dropouts!  This is only fitting, as SS frames are what made Rock Lobster famous.  Every other Expert frame I've seen only has one gusset, on the downtube.  This one even comes with a handbuilt Rock Lobster quill stem! (Yes, it looks similar to the Salsa Moto.  Sadoff has confirmed that he indeed built these stems himself and they are slightly different than the Salsa)

The original owner bought this in Marin County in the 90's, and tells me it wears it's original paint and decals.  The stays are "dipped" black at the end, just like classic road bikes did with chrome dipped stays.  The vibrant red gets darker right before the black parts

The parts that come on this frame are what remains of the original build.  The darker red on the stays is a near perfect color match to the (working!) Marzocchi Bomber Z2 BAM. Other prime 1990's parts included in this sale include a rare Stronglight X14 MTB headset with it's decal removed, Suntour XC Pro WTB Grease-Guard Bottom Bracket, and Salsa seat post binder QR clamp.

Condition

The frame appears straight and is free from dents/bends/cracks/rust and other damage.  It's original paint has a smattering of chips throughout as well as what looks like running paint drops on the top tube mostly (probably not what it actually is, unknown cause).  Decals are mostly intact.  The Bomber Z2 is in excellent shape with great compression/rebound and no leaks, ready to ride.  Not quite show condition cosmetically, but not far off.  Rock Lobster stem has worn paint in spots.  Headset, bb, and QR are in excellent shape.

Sell / Trade / Donate

I'm always buying high end bikes, parts, accessories, memorabilia, etc. While I'm particularly seeking large piles of new old stock parts, used items in nice condition are welcome.
