Item Condition

I grade products as honestly as possible and depict blemishes in both description and photos—please study them carefully. I tend to be overcritical and customers report items to be in better shape than expected often. From best condition to worst condition, my grading scale is as follows. Mint / near mint+ / near mint / excellent+ / excellent / great / very good / average / fair.

Description

* Local pickup price in Fort Collins, Colorado is $1400!

Exceptional very early 1980's Colnago Super classic road racing bicycle, in the famous Saronni red color scheme.  This one has chrome head lugs, and milled flat crown.  Paint and decals are completely original, and in wonderful shape with just a few blemishes.  The gruppo is a heavily pantographed mix of Campagnolo Nuovo & Super Record. Pantos are present on seatpost, chainrings, brake levers, and stem.  Wheelset is Gran Sport hubs and Mavic MA40 clinchers with modern tan sidewall Schwalbe.

The frame appears to be a 1982 or 1983 model based on catalog scans and the Velo Retro timeline.  The spindle-shaped chainstay bridge ID's it as 1981 or later, and the downtube decal with world champion stripes and one side and black clover on the other ID's it as 1982-1983 likely.  Rear derailleur is Patent 1981, crank arm date code is 11 in rectangle.  Frame "number" stamped on driveside dropout is A056 - EY - USA.  USA dictates it was an export to the states, 56 is the size, EY could be the builder?  There's no way to determine Colnago build date via frame numbers.

Size

  • Stamped size: 56
  • Seat tube: 55cm (center to top of seat tube)
  • Top tube: 56cm
  • Head tube: 133mm

Condition

Preserved almost show bike condition.  The frame appears straight with ZERO dents, bends, cracks, or rust.  The original paint and decals are near mint and glossy with just a flew blemishes to note.  (1) The downtube white panel has a line of little chips/scratches. (2) Top tube drive side has a vertical scratch directly in the middle of the tube.  Head lugs and fork chrome have just the TINIEST little surface corrosion spots here and there. There is NOT any pitting or deep rust.  I haven't even attempted to clean this up, but I think it will come off.

The components overall are mostly near mint.  All Campy parts are near mint with minimal blemishes, with the exception of cracked jockey wheels.  Hoods are supple but showing the first signs of starting to dry.

I'm always buying high end bikes, parts, accessories, memorabilia, etc. While I'm particularly seeking large piles of new old stock parts, used items in nice condition are welcome.
