Description

Andy Gilmour is a world-renouned master frame builder located in Tucson, Arizona. He began making high quality frames in 1974, and has since made frames for numerous olympic cycling teams and pro racers with a high win rate. This is an ornately detailed race frame Andy built for one of his racers, Fred Williams (confirmed by Andy).  Fred's initials are on the BB shell, drillium style in place of a frame number.  It has its original paintjob from Andy's preferred painter, Ron Cipriani. It appears to be built in 1978 or 1979, identified by the Columbus decal which changed to red border in 1980 (Andy told me it was late 1970's to very early 1980's).

It has a number of curious features; The downtube shifter braze ons are elevated on top of the downtube for aerodynamics.  It has a vertical plate brazed to the top of the tube with traditional shifter mounts attached to it, so you can use standard shifters.  The rear dropout is drilled for a Campagnolo Porta-Catena chain rest which was not done by Andy (you can ride without one too, it's just two tiny holes in the dropout).  The rear derailleur cable stop is brazed directly to the dropout, "because it was cool" in Andy's words.  The chainstay bridge is boxed and massive, "because beefy was in".  The lugs are filed very thinly and into deadly-looking points, with round cutouts.  Sloping fork with long tangs and cutouts.  It has a chainrest peg, and a pump peg oddly. Maybe it was a long distance race bike.  Cable guides on top of BB shell.

Condition:

The frame and fork have their original paint and decals, fully unrestored with a lovely patina showing it's racing heritage.  The frame is straight and in great condition.  Zero rust, dents, cracks, bends, etc. Overall the decals are intact and quite clean.  Paint is glossy and deep but with chips and little scratches.  There's enough chips that I won't point out each one, but they're depicted accurately on the photos.  The one thing worth noting is there's oddly a hole in the threads of the fork steerer.  There's no rust on the steerer anywhere, i'm unsure what could have caused this.  The headset threads right over the hole as if it wasn't there luckily.  Overall this is a gorgeous "original paint" bike that's almost as good with the patina as it would be were you to restore it.

I'm always buying high end bikes, parts, accessories, memorabilia, etc. While I'm particularly seeking large piles of new old stock parts, used items in nice condition are welcome.
