Description

This is a tough to find Team Mapei version of the 1st generation Colnago Dream frame.  It i a race bike made from aircraft aluminum, and "clover" shaped tubing similar to that of the Master steel tube shape.  It has it's original paint matched Precisa straight blade steel fork (the crown lugs on this one are more pointed and cooler than the standard Precisa lugs though).  It includes two Team Mapei water bottles!  They are cracked and taped together so they're not for use, but they look nice.

From what I can determine, this first version (without B-Stays, or the Lux/HP designation) was made from 1997-1999.  The odd thing about this frame is it has downtube shifter braze on's!  This is unusual for a bike in the late 1990's, and I've never seen another Dream frame with them.  The later versions typically had the carbon Colnago Star fork, but this one has the more classic straight blade steel fork.

The seatpost clamp has been upgraded to a Campagnolo period correct model, as there were common issues with the stock clamp on the Dream.

Sizing

This is roughly a 58cm, though sizing for this model is a bit non-typical.  The size Colnago uses to refer to frames in this model is from crank bolt to seattube binder bolt center.  The top tube is 58cm, seat tube c-c is 57cm, seattube c-t 57.5cm.  In general, it is a Large to Extra Large and will fit riders roughly 5ft 11 to 6ft 3.

Condition

Excellent+ well taken care of shape!  It was owned by a long time bicycle industry guy, and it shows.  Overall the paint is glossy and clean.  Top tube, Seat tube, fork, and top/sides of the downtube are practically mint.  All decals and artwork are perfect.  It's not a perfect show bike and has been ridden, but it's in prime condition for a rider with some minimal chips in the usual spots noted below.

As for paint wear, it is generally isolated to the points below.  Other than these, any wear is quite minor and infrequent.

  • Drive-side of downtube near BB, from wrench slip
  • A few chips on the underside of downtube, but not too much
  • Inner non-drive chainstay tire rub
  • Chip on edge of headtube/headset interface, lower front
  • One tiny 1mm chip on top tube

Details

  • Serial number: The only number is 591 with some sort of symbol or unreadable letters under the BB shell
  • Aluminum frame, steel fork
  • Seatpost size: 27.2mm
  • BB threads: Italian
