This wild ultra-boutique fillet brazed steel road bike was handmade and painted by John Slawta in Oregon, circa early to mid 1990's. This is a pure road/race machine, no fender eyelets here! It comes with the original steel lugged sloping crown steel fork, as well as a Columbus Carve carbon fork. Rear spacing is 130mm for modern drivetrains, braze ons for downtube shifters (and comes with attached Campagnolo Ergo/STI/Bar End adapters). Dropouts are the gorgeous "flattened" Long Shen LR05 (Tange), which indicates likely Tange Prestige ultralight tubing (bikes of this era from Slawta were mostly Reynolds 853 or Tange Prestige). 27.0mm seatpost diameter indicates likely 7-4-7 tubing which is consistent with Prestige. When new, this frameset would have cost about $4500.

Like the Late Dario Pegoretti's bikes, Slawta's bikes are literal pieces of artwork as much as they are functional & fast bicycles. The paint job is one of John's supremely weird yet subdued and tasteful works of art vs his absurdly loud "look at me" works. It reminds me of the aftermath of a star explosion in space, or the inert gases and creatures of the milky way. The landscape features depictions of various microbes as John liked to use, but in a wild space-like way I've not seen before. The base color is a gem-like crimson red, which deepens to maroon & black cherry when it crosses path with a stray microbe or nebula. Some of the worms are even translucent, showing color-shifting renditions of the crimson "space" beyond. Speaking of those creatures, among them are radiant blue or purple space worms (or are they sandworms from Dune?) There are some bright pink/white/red more or less round spots that could be stars.

Condition

Overall this frame presents in glorious near mint to mint condition, though when looking closer you'll find some subtly hidden chips that blend into the paintwork. Frame is straight, ZERO dents, dings, cracks, bends, rust. The finish is deep and glossy, and free of the usual micro-scratching and general wear you find on vintage bikes. As for those chips; 1) the worst are on the driveside chainstay nearly on the underside 2) fork crown has a few chips from removing a crown race, and a tiny one or two further out 3) various chips on underside of DT/CS/BB from gravel spray 4) crescent moon shaped chip on rear of headtube driveside an 2"below pump peg 5) vaguely bird-shaped chip on top of downtube just past the lower bottle cage bolt. 6) various small chips on dropouts. There are a few other tiny tiny ones, but none stand out or are worth mentioning. The carbon fork is essentially new, it was installed right before it stopped being ridden.

Details

Frame number: XXX862, inside non-drive dropout (first three numbers no longer visible due to paint chipped)

Top tube: 55cm

Seat tube: 55cm to top of seat tube, 54cm c-t (to top of top tube)

Head tube: 123mm

Chainstays: 410mm

Seatpost needed: 27.0mm

BB threads: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0785/5144/9740/files/landshark_steel_frame_fork_vintage_1990s_55cm__1__60613.1665189905.1280.1280.jpg?v=1792369670
https://swooncycles.com/products/1990s-land-shark-road-shark-fillet-brazed-steel-frameset-55cm-2-forks-original-space-microbe-themed-paint-gem-tone-red-purple-blue
